Great news for those who enjoy beach access at Smith Point via 4×4.

After more than two months of closure, the Outer Beach is now open on a limited basis for  all-terrain vehicles with the proper beach permit, the Suffolk County Parks Department just announced online.

The beach has been closed due to nesting piping plovers, a federally protected shorebird that this year built nests near the entrance to the beach, causing a longer than normal closure.

The limit on the beach is 400 vehicles, according to the announcement.

There is still no access to the Moriches Inlet and Outer Beach camping is not allowed.

For up-to-date conditions please call the parks department at 631-852-1315.
