Hike To Long Cove from Watch Hill Saturday June 16th

June 16, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free + Ferry

Join Park Ranger Patricia Whitlock Riley on a hike into the Otis Pike High Dune Wilderness to visit the site of the community of Long Cove. Long Cove was originally a fishing community built with the salvage of shipwrecks in the 1800’s. Families of the original squatters built summer shacks in the 1900’s which remained until the establishment of Fire Island National Seashore in 1964, when they were removed through the 1990’s. Learn about life on the Great South Beach, and how change is inevitable on our dynamic island. 3-miles roundtrip. Dress for the weather and be prepared for walking on sand. Bring drinking water, a snack, insect and sun protection.

The walk is from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. if you have your own transportation (boat) or walking from Davis Park.  Otherwise you will be taking the 10:00 a.m. Watch Hill Ferry that departs from the Watch Hill Ferry Terminal, 160 West Avenue in Patchogue.  Please visit the Davis Park Ferry Website for more information.

Meet at the Watch Hill Dune Station at 11:00 a.m.
