I was on the 3:00 p.m. Cross Sound Ferry leaving New London, CT on the way to Orient when we were passed by a Virginia Class (SSN-774 Class) Attack Submarine on the way to Naval Base New London. I have never seen one of these up close- 377 feet long, 34 feet wide and a price tag near $3 Billion.
Accompanied by a tug boat and two navy patrol boats with some big guns, about 25 crew members were on deck with an armed soldier and rescue swimmer.
As a bonus I took some video and images of some of the same storms that rocked most of Long Island Sunday afternoon that we dodged coming across the sound on page 3.
