Fireislandandbeyond.com took a  recent climb to the top of the Fire Island Lighthouse, maintained by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society

We highly recommend it. (More photos below.)

The lighthouse can be reached by parking toward the eastern end of Robert Moses Field 5.

The boardwalk to the lighthouse offers a nice walk through the dunes and offers multiple angles and photo opportunities of the lighthouse and attached buildings.

The base of the 180-foot tower offers a gift shop, museum, and several interesting exhibits.

It’s a pleasant climb up the steel spiral staircase, and the views from the white-trimmed windows are stunning.

The top of the tower offers spectacular views of the Great South Bay, Atlantic Ocean, Fire Island and New York City skyline, visible to the naked eye to the west.

There are occasional sunset tours available during the summer; check the schedule.

Maybe you’ll see us there!
