This is a message from Fire Island National Seashore:
Patchogue, NY – Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company has begun work on Phase Three of the Fire Island to Moriches Inlet (FIMI) Stabilization Project. As the project progresses, beach driving closures will be required on the west end of Fire Island National Seashore.
By mid-October beach driving closures will be required from Corneille Estate to Ocean Bay Park. As construction continues west, beach driving closures will be issued as needed from Atlantique to Kismet. There will be no vehicles permitted on the beach in closed areas during this phase of construction. Residents, contractors, essential service, and municipal permit holders will be notified of closures and required to use the interior route. Permit holders are asked to allow for extra travel time while the project is underway. Beach access for pedestrians will be permitted outside designated work zones.
FIMI is an initial, one-time placement of sand as part of the overall Fire Island to Montauk Point Reformulation Study and is funded and authorized by the Hurricane Sandy Relief Act. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract, awarded to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, calls for placement of sand from Fair Harbor through Seaview. This phase of the FIMI project involves construction of a dune and wide, flat elevated berm. Construction is slated for completion in early 2017.
Information on the FIMI project may be found on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.
