Carmans River is one of the four largest rivers on Long Island, stretching 11 miles from near Cathedral Pines in Yaphank all the way down to the Great South Bay in Brookhaven. The lower section of the river below Montauk Highway is part of the Wertheim Wildlife Refuge, 2400 acres of undeveloped tidal wetlands and forest. The only sign of civilization in this section of the river is Squassux Landing and Beaver Dam Road on the west side.
Last week I checked it out for some aerial photos and videos at sunrise over a thin, low canopy of ground fog. If you didn’t know this was Long Island you might think this was a remote wilderness area somewhere very far away.
