During our big cold snap last weekend, most of the Great South Bay at least partially frozen over. I was at Bellport Dock looking around for some Winter Ducks when the Suffolk County Marine Bureau Mike Boat fired up and circled inside the marina breaking up the ice. This is a 27-foot Safe Boat favored by the U.S. Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and other Government agencies around the U.S. and the world. I figured once they were done clearing the marina they would tie back up but to my surprise they headed out into the bay through a section clear of ice. At this point I still expected them to turn around but they just kept going! I headed west to the Bellport / East Patchogue border to see how far they could make it and sent my drone up to check it out.
