September is known for some of the biggest surf of the year, generated by tropical storms or hurricanes passing by hundreds or even thousands of miles offshore. We have had several so far this season but Hurricane Humberto seemed to bring the biggest and longest periods swells to Fire Island on September 20th. The National Hurricane Graphic below shows Humberto about 1000 miles to our east late on the evening of September 19th.
I checked out Bellport Beach the next morning and captured some images and aerial video. While certainly not the biggest surf we get, they were still impressive from a storm that far away.
