This video above and images below and on page 2 were taken September 11th as the new moon tide coupled with winds out of the east created problems at a few Fire Island beaches. The high water covered most of the sand delta that fans out into the bay. The inlet appears larger and deeper than normal as well.
There are also several areas that appear to have overwashed into what is left of the dunes.
Dr. Charles Flagg took an aerial survey on Sunday Morning and as you will see with his report and images on page 3, water levels have returned to normal levels with sand appearing to choke off a lot of the water flow. We will continue to monitor the situation as the Moriches Inlet / Smith Point Beach Dredging project progresses.
