After over two years of planning, work started last month on the Bellport Dock reconstruction. The dock sustained damage during Hurricane Sandy that continued to worsen over time. Big sections of the bulkhead near the Yacht club were caving in and sinkholes started appearing after storms and high tides. The village applied for and was awarded a FEMA grant for $2.3 Million. Besides replacing the entire bulkhead, new DEC compliant storm drains and a new electrical system will be installed. Work is expected to be done by April 1st in time for the boating season.
Terry Marine out of Riverhead was awarded the contract. For safety reasons the entire dock is fenced off so it is very difficult to see what is going on. I took advantage of the perfect weather on Saturday for a drone flight over the project for a birds-eye view. Photos on Page 2 were taken from a boat yesterday. Aerial Photos on pages 3-5.
