KEMPS RIDLEY (LEPIDOCHELYS KEMPII) CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
The Kemp’s Ridley is the most endangered and smallest of the local Sea Turtles.
They average 20-28 inches long and 80 -110 pounds but only juveniles around a foot long and 10 pounds spend time in our waters.
These long distance travelers have only one known nesting ground on a single stretch of beach near Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Unfortunately they are endangered largely due to exploitation of their meat and eggs.
GREEN (CHELONIA MYDAS) ENDANGERED
The largest of the hard shelled turtles, the green sea turtle can reach 4 feet long and 500 pounds but average 3 feet and 25o pounds.
Green turtles are a popular food source in a number of cultures, leading to a drastic decline in population.
